Washing your Diapers

Everyone develops their own system for washing diapers. Experiment until you find the best method for you. It's easy once it becomes a habit. Here are some ideas:

  1. Shake off access poop in the toilet .You may want to use flushable liners to catch most of the poop. Although some people don't bother, we suggest you rinse the diaper off.
  2. Put diaper in the diaper pail, wet diapers go straight in the pail along with washable cloth wipes. Use a dry pail and wash every two to three days. It usually is not necessary to put anything in the pail to deodorize.
  3. Rotate the covers and let them air dry between uses. Keep them in a separate bin, not in the diaper pail as they will loose their water proofing and absorb the ammonia smell. In the end of the day most covers should be hand-washed and hung to dry unless they are machine washable.
  4. Put the diapers in the washing machine. After a pre wash in warm water and some mild regular detergent wash them in hot water with more detergent on the longest cycle. About every second wash add vinegar to the final rinse which acts as a natural deodorizer, sanitizer and brightener. It also helps to maintain the Ph balance in the diapers.
  5. Place in dryer or hang to dry in the sun.

Helpful Hints

  • Never use bleach (breaks the fibers down and wears out the diaper)
  • Never use fabric softeners or dryer sheets ("water proofs" the diapers as supposed to making them more absorbent)
  • Flushable liners can be washed and reused several times if only peed on.
  • You do not need to rinse off a breastfed baby's diaper, just put it straight in the pail. That "mustard like" poop washes right out.
  • Wash no more than 24 diapers at a time, diapers need a lot of room to agitate well.
  • New diapers will not be absorbent until washed a few times.
  • If possible use a pre-wash and extra rinse cycle to help get the diapers cleaner.
  • Washing sodas like Borax will help against stains but are harsh on the diapers. Drying in the sun has been said to help.

Washing Wool

Make your own wool wash if you use a lot of wool in your diapering - it can save you plenty of money and it's a simple process :)

To wash a bucket or sink of wool: Fill a cup with boiling water and add a small pea-like drop of lanolin, for example, Lansinoh. Add about 1/4 t. of baby shampoo, we use Dr. Bronners, and then stir quickly to combine the melted lanolin in the liquid. You can also stir in a few drops of a favorite essential oil now - Lavender is calming, Tea Tree is a nice anti-bacterial, and keeps moths away, as does Eucalyptus oil. Add the cupful of this mixture to a sinkful/bucket of hot water, and submerge your wool items. Squeeze them gently a few times, then let them soak for about 10 minutes. Let the water out of the sink, and squeeze out the water. Rinse the items with clear warm water, squeeze out, then roll in a towel and lay flat to dry.

To wash a washing-machine load of wool: Fill a 2 cup measure with boiling water, and add about 1/2 - 1 t. of lanolin and about 1 T. baby shampoo, plus whatever essential oils you choose. Stir briskly to suspend the melted lanolin. Fill the washing machine with hot water, but turn it off when it starts to agitate. Add your measuring cup of "wool wash", and then add your woolen items. Make sure they are all well submerged, them let them soak for about 10 minutes. Set the washing machin to "spin", and run the complete spin cycle. Remove the woolens from the washer, and lay flat to dry.

For Heavy Lanolizing: Use 2-3 times the amount of lanolin you would normally use for washing. Heavy lanolizing should be an occasional practice, with regular lanolin washes between times.
